Van hiv genezen “London Patient” op boot PrEPnu tijdens Amsterdam Pride vanwege falend PrEP-beleid
Stichting PrEPnu haalt één van de vijf ooit van hiv genezen mensen op de wereld naar Nederland voor haar boot tijdens de Amsterdam Pride. Adam Castillejo is de tweede persoon die genas van hiv en is één van een extreem klein clubje mensen die dit geluk kent. Hiv is na 40 jaar nog steeds niet te genezen en een aandoening voor het leven. Ook bestaat er nog steeds geen vaccin. Daarmee is PrEP één van de belangrijkste middelen, naast onder andere testen, om een hiv-infectie te voorkomen. “Het is stuitend – aldus PrEPnu – dat er in Nederland na 10 jaar nog steeds geen brede toegankelijkheid is voor PrEP.” Dat vindt ook Adam Castillejo, die wereldwijd pleit voor betere hiv-preventie, -behandeling en mogelijkheid van genezing in de toekomst. Hij is geschokt dat in een land als Nederland PrEP nog steeds niet goed geregeld is. Hij komt daarom naar de Amsterdam Pride om deze boodschap kracht bij te zetten.
Nederland loopt internationaal ver achter
PrEP is een pilletje dat je dagelijks, of om het hebben van seks heen, slikt. Daarmee voorkom je een hiv-infectie en bij juist gebruik is dat 99% effectief . Sinds PrEP beschikbaar kwam, zet Stichting PrEPnu zich in voor de beschikbaarheid ervan in Nederland. Dat is best bijzonder want in veel landen om ons heen en ver daarbuiten is deze strijd niet nodig. In landen als bijvoorbeeld Spanje, Frankrijk, Engeland, Duitsland, Italië maar ook buiten Europa zoals Zimbabwe en de Verenigde Staten is toegang tot PrEP op verschillende manieren goed geregeld. Dat wekt internationaal soms verbazing zoals Adam Castillejo ook merkt tijdens zijn lezingen wereldwijd. “Ik kom op veel verschillende plekken waar mensen overtuigd moeten worden van hiv-preventie en het overweldigende wetenschappelijke bewijs voor de effectiviteit van PrEP soms niet kennen of vertrouwen. Maar dat een progressief en hoogopgeleid land als Nederland internationaal achterloopt is echt bizar en schadelijk voor Nederlanders zelf.”
Stand van zaken nieuw PrEP-beleid
Stichting PrEPnu voert actie voor een breed toegankelijk PrEP-beleid en ging afgelopen periode in gesprek met onder andere minister Kuipers die hier verantwoordelijk voor is. Hij heeft aangegeven voor brede toegankelijkheid te zijn en binnenkort met nieuw beleid te komen. PrEPnu; “Maar dat hebben we al vaker gehoord, we zijn inmiddels 10 jaar verder en de pandemie bestaat al zo’n 40 jaar.” Elk jaar worden er vele honderden mensen gediagnosticeerd met hiv in Nederland . We moeten echt naar 0 infecties zoals het Aidsfonds en de gemeente Amsterdam zich onder andere ten doel stelde. Daarvoor is een brede aanpak nodig van GGD, huisartsen, andere zorgverleners en (netwerk)organisaties maar vooral doorzettingsvermogen en nieuw beleid van de minister. “Brede toegankelijkheid tot PrEP is een absolute noodzakelijkheid. Vele duizenden mensen hebben nu nog steeds geen of zeer beperkt toegang. Ondertussen liepen diverse mensen een hiv-infectie op. Totaal onnodig, schadelijk en op een persoonlijk niveau traumatiserend, waar zijn we nou mee bezig?” aldus de woordvoerder van Stichting PrEPnu.
De tijd dringt
Op dit moment loopt er een pilot in Nederland met PrEP die slechts aan een beperkt aantal en dus veel te weinig mensen PrEP biedt. Die pilot loopt komend jaar af en de tijd begint te dringen voor een nieuw toegankelijker PrEP-beleid. Het is belangrijk dat dit niet stil komt te liggen, ook nu het kabinet demissionair is, een nieuwe regering komt hoogstwaarschijnlijk te laat. Daarom trekt Stichting PrEPnu alles uit de kast. “We zien ons meer dan ooit genoodzaakt aandacht te vragen voor het probleem dat we aan de horizon zien opdoemen. We waren al teleurgesteld dat PrEP in Nederland slechts als pilot beschikbaar kwam, maar als de minister niet snel met een goed voorstel komt, loopt de pilot af en zitten we wederom met niks.” Daarom riep de stichting nu ook internationaal de hulp in van voormalig hiv-patiënt Adam Castillejo en organiseerde ze een boot tijdens de Amsterdam Pride. Daarnaast wordt er een event georganiseerd op vrijdag 4 augustus met Adam Castillejo en andere experts om mensen te informeren. Dutch foundation PrEPnu hauls hiv cured “London patient” on board during Amsterdam pride due to failing PrEP policy
The PrEPnu (PrEPnow) Foundation brings one of the five ever from hiv cured people in the world to the Netherlands for her boat during the Amsterdam pride parade. Adam Castillejo is the second person to be cured of hiv and is one of an extremely small but fortunate group. After 40 years, hiv is still incurable and a chronic condition. There is also still no vaccine. This makes PrEP one of the most important means, in addition to testing, to prevent an hiv infection. “It is disturbing – according to PrEPnu – that after 10 years there is still no general access to PrEP in the Netherlands” and Adam Castillejo agrees. Giving lectures worldwide for better hiv prevention, treatment and feasible cure, he is shocked that in a country like the Netherlands this is still an issue. Therefore he is happy to attend the Amsterdam Pride to reinforce this message of PrEPnu.
The Netherlands lags far behind internationally
PrEP is a pill that you take daily or around seks. This prevents an hiv infection and is 99% proven effective when used correctly. Since PrEP came to existence, the PrEPnu Foundation has been committed to its availability in the Netherlands. That is quite exceptional because in many countries around us this struggle is not necessary. In countries such as Spain, France, England, Germany, Italy, but also outside Europe such as Zimbabwe and the United States, access to PrEP is well organised in various ways. This sometimes sparks international surprise, as Adam Castillejo also notes during his lectures worldwide. “I visit many different places where people need to be convinced and trust the importance of hiv prevention, and sometimes they are not aware of the overwhelming scientific evidence for the effectiveness of PrEP. But the fact that a progressive and educated country like the Netherlands is lagging behind internationally is really bizarre and harmful for Dutch people themselves.”
Status of new PrEP policy
The PrEPnu Foundation campaigns for a widely accessible PrEP policy and recently spoke with many stakeholders including Minister Kuipers, who is responsible for the dutch health policies. He has indicated that he is in favor of better availability and that he will soon come up with a new policy. PrEPnu; “We have heard that before, we are 10 years further though and the pandemic has been around for about 40 years.” Every year many hundreds of people are diagnosed with hiv in the Netherlands. We have to commit to get to 0 infections, as the Aidsfonds and the municipality of Amsterdam are striving for. This requires a broad approach from the GGD, general practitioners, other care providers and (network) organizations, but above all courage and a new policy from the minister. “Wide accessibility to PrEP is an absolute necessity. Many thousands of people in the Netherlands still have no or very limited access. While waiting, several people contracted an hiv infection. Totally unnecessary, harmful and traumatizing on a personal level, what are we doing?” says the spokesperson for the PrEPnu Foundation.
Time is running out
There is currently a pilot in the Netherlands with PrEP that only offers PrEP to a limited number and therefore not enough people. This pilot will end next year and time is running out for a new, more accessible PrEP policy. It is important that this does not come to a standstill, even now that the government has fallen, a new government will probably come too late. That is why the PrEPnu Foundation pulls out all the stops. “More than ever, we feel compelled to draw attention to the problem we see looming on the horizon. We were already disappointed that PrEP only became available as a pilot in the Netherlands, but if the minister does not come up with a good proposal soon, the pilot will end and we will again be left with nothing.” That is why the foundation now also called in international help from former hiv patient Adam Castillejo and organized a boat during the Amsterdam pride.
